Families Pinched By Cost Of Special Needs Care

// January 12th, 2010 // News That Affects You

A ds091207-spendingquarter of low-income Americans who have a child with a disability spend over 3 percent of their income to meet their child’s health needs, but how much a family spends can vary greatly depending on the state where they live.

Despite programs like Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), low-income families are reporting significant out-of-pocket health-related expenditures for a child with a disability. A family of four living at the federal poverty level is spending about $1,200 a year out-of-pocket on therapy, home modifications, wheelchairs, diapers and other health-related needs, according to the findings of a study published in the December supplement of the journal Pediatrics.  Read more: http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2009/12/08/families-pinched-cost/6383/

Autism may cluster among highly educated

// January 12th, 2010 // Feature Articles

TUESDAY, Jan. 5 (HealthDay News) — Highly educated, older parents are more likely to have a child diagnosed with autism, a new study finds.

Using data on about 2.5 million births in California in a five-year period, researchers identified 10 autism clusters, or geographical areas in which there was a higher than usual incidence of children diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental disability that’s marked by impaired social and communication skills, and repetitive behaviors.

The rate of autism in the clusters was about twice that of the surrounding areas.  See the full article: http://www.wggb.com/Global/story.asp?S=11772524&nav=menu1460_9514

Social Security Administration Praises Court Ruling

// January 12th, 2010 // Feature Articles

“For more than a year, I have made the case that these furloughs cost states money, hurt their most vulnerable citizens, and harm hard-working civil servants. California’s furlough of Disability Determination Service (DDS) employees costs the state $849,000 per furlough day in administrative funding.  More importantly, each furlough day results in a delay costing California’s disabled citizens over $420,000 in much-needed Social Security benefits.  For the sake of the citizens of California, I call on Governor Schwarzenegger to reject his own failed policy and not appeal the court’s ruling.”  Click here for the full article.SSA California Furlough — Press Release
